We Need You to Volunteer

1920s Australian Horse Carriage

The Australiana Pioneer Village is managed and run by Volunteers

Volunteering with The Friends of the Australiana Pioneer Village Society allows you to be part of a team preserving our heritage and allows you to connect with a like-minded community as well as engaging with members of the public.

There are many opportunities to help when you volunteer. If you like to be social and engage with others, consider that educating young people is important or would just like to be part of a team maintaining the buildings, helping with the animals or lending a hand on the 28 acres of land and gardens. You can have a go at anything or everything.

Sundays and Special Events

We are open on Sunday to the public between 10am and 4pm. By volunteering on a Sunday you have the flexibility of hours you want to work. There is no commitment for every Sunday just inform us of your availability. Sundays are our busiest times and as such a time when most volunteers are needed.

We hold special events throughout the year e.g. Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Horses’ Birthday, Fathers’ Day, Country Fair & Markets etc. Be accredited to drive a train or tractor.

Maintenance Days – Thurs & Sat

Depending on what’s on, could be a set-up, sweeping, raking and general gardening. You can negotiate with consideration of your skill set or physical ability.

Education Programme – Tues and Wed 10am – 1pm

For those that would like to see the wonder and joy of young children visiting the past, then the education programme days may be for you. On these days we run presentations and demonstrations in the following stations.

  • Water Pump and adjacent buildings – children can try the water pump, visit the police dock and the pillory.
  • Laundry in earlier times – talk on laundry work before water was on tap and electricity available. Plenty of hands-on experimentation.
  • Cartwright Cottage – a visit and talk on the home of late 19th century Hawkesbury residents and their lives.
  • Blacksmiths – talk and video on the important work of the Blacksmith and young apprentices for Hawkesbury residents.
  • Butter Churning – a talk and then practice making butter by hand
  • Tractor ride – a tractor ride around the lagoon to meet our animals – sheep, goats, mule and Shetland pony
  • Shearing shed – talk on production of wool from the shearing of sheep to spinning and making cloth.
  • Schoolhouse – Talk and props in the original Marsden Park Public School.
